Glutathione, the closest we have to the fountain of youth?
Glutathione is often coined “The Mother of All Antioxidants”, and for good reason!
Here are just a few things it is known to do.
- It flushes out toxins.
- It protects & invigorates the skin.
- It reduces inflammation.
- It promotes gut health.
- It helps prevent heart disease.
- It fights bacteria.
- It boosts the immune system.
- It fortifies the bones.
- It strengthens muscles & improves endurance.
- It promotes cognitive health.
- It improves sleep.
- It promotes overall longevity.
So what exactly is glutathione? Glutathione (GSH) is a peptide consisting of three key amino acids ( cysteine, glycine and glutamate). Every cell in our body produces it and many believe that the level of GSH in our cells is a predictor of how long we will live!
When I discovered I had lyme disease ( bacterial infection from a tick bite) my glutathione levels were tested and they were low. I have since recovered and also supplement with glutathione. My levels are in a good healthy range now, but I will always keep them that way!
Maintaining optimum levels of glutathione is crucial in protecting our body’s balance of homeostasis. Disturbances in GHS balance have been implicated in the progression of a number of diseases like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, inflammatory, immune, and metabolic diseases. Basically where ever you find a chronic disease, glutathione levels will be low.
A lot of factors can deplete our natural glutathione. Poor diet, stress, pollution, radiation, alcohol, smoking, pharmaceuticals, various chemicals and heavy metals all contribute to GHS reduction. Studies also show that when we reach the age of 25, our GSH levels begin to decline at the rate of 15% every year. Fortunately there are some supplements and foods that can help naturally boost our GSH levels.
- Milk Thistle
- Whey Protein
- Sulfur Foods
- NAC N-acetyl cysteine
- A-Lipoic Acid
- Methylation Nutrients Vitamin B6, B9, B12 & Biotin
- Selenium
- Vitamin C & E
- Raw Liver
You can also purchase glutathione supplements but know what you are buying as most of them are a waste of money. You have to have one that is fat-soluble. A liposomal glutathione coated in phospholipids or fats to make sure they make it to the small intestine.
There are also health clinics that offer glutathione intravenously, which played a part my my recovery from Lyme.
It is worth it to make an effort to increase your levels of glutathione in your body as it is highly beneficial to your overall health!
