The Importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is HUGELY important!  You may hear a lot of buzz about this supplement today, and for good reason.  Anywhere from 41-90% of the population is deficient in this vitamin.  Most everyone can use vitamin D.  Most of us are indoors all day and if you live in the northern part of the country the sun is too weak much of the year to stimulate vitamin D production, so I recommend supplementation.

Supplementation of vitamin D can be a good tool for prevention of colds and viruses that are so prevalent this season.  The function of our body relies on vitamin D and it is a natural antibiotic and antiviral compound.  Along with immunity protection, new research has shown the link of low vitamin D levels with a risk of cognitive decline and mental impairment. It is optimal for brain function.  Another reason to keep our vitamin D levels up is that low levels are linked to many different types of cancer, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, hearing loss, rickets in children, high blood pressure, psoriasis, heart disease, and diabetes.

Ways to increase our vitamin D naturally would be to increase sun exposure, but since that is not always possible, and many avoid the sun for skin cancer prevention, then supplementing is a good idea.  Daily intake of 1000-4000 IU a day should be enough to ensure optimal blood levels.
